One of the English-speaking world?s top writing coaches will speak to delegates at this year?s NWSP Fall Press Day Oct. 24 at University of Oregon in Eugene. Jack Hart?s session will reveal ?The Secrets of Telling True Stories? based on news reports that will put your publications on the path of the world?s best narrative journalism.

Hart is currently the interim director of the SOJC?s George Turnbull Center in Portland, headquarters of Northwest Scholastic Press.

During his quarter century at?The Oregonian, the Pacific Northwest?s largest newspaper, Hart served as managing editor, training editor, and writing coach. He has conducted writing workshops throughout the English-speaking world.?He also has worked as a reporter, arts and leisure editor, Sunday magazine editor, and editor at large. He has additional reporting experience at two other newspapers.

Hart is also the author of?A Writer?s Coach: An Editor?s Guide to Words That Work, released as a Pantheon hardback in 2006 and as a The paperback edition of ?A Writer?s Coach? was published by Anchor Books in 2007. A Writer?s Coach?is Hart?s effort to make writing less painful for the rest of us. The book can help any writer learn the tricks and habits of good writers.

?Just about everybody agrees that good writing is tight, that it?s forceful,? Hart explains. ?Good writing incorporates lively verbs and clean syntax. It?s colorful. It includes descriptive elements that can put you in the scene. It?s rhythmic. ? Developing a process to get you there is not some closely guarded mystery, Hart explains, but the step-by-step conquest of craft.

His latest book, Storycraft: The Complete Guide to Writing Narrative Nonfiction?(Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing) was published last summer.

Hart?s other works include? The Information Empire,?a history of the?Los Angeles Times,?along with dozens of articles for popular magazines, academic journals, and trade publications. His column, ?The Writer?s Workshop,? ran in?Editor & Publisher?magazine for a decade.

He edited four Pulitzer Prize finalists, including winners in explanatory journalism and feature writing. He also edited a portion of the work recognized with the 2001 Pulitzer Gold Medal for Public Service and the 2006 breaking-news Pulitzer.?Along the way he developed an international reputation for his work with narrative nonfiction.

Hart, who earned his doctorate at the University of Wisconsin doctorate in Mass Communications, was a tenured faculty member and acting dean of the journalism school at the University of Oregon, and taught at six major universities. He?s also served as visiting faculty at the American Press Institute and the Poynter Institute for Media Studies.

He has coached national winners of the ASNE writing awards, the Ernie Pyle award, the Scripps-Howard business-writing award, the Overseas Press Club awards, the Headliners awards and the Society of Professional Journalists feature-writing award.

He was recently profiled by the University of Washington as an outstanding alumnus of the Department of Communication. (http://www.com.washington.edu/alumni/notes/profiles/hart.html)?The article explains how he accidently discovered journalism and became one of the first writing coaches for a daily newspaper.

Euro zone still big uncertainty, but situation improving

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Europe's debt crisis remains the biggest drag on the global economy, but the region is in a much better situation today than it was, U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Tuesday.

"For the first time they have in place a plausibly powerful set of financial tools to support a strategy," Geithner said.

The European Central Bank said earlier this month it stands at the ready to buy unlimited amounts of bonds issued by euro zone member states if they put in a formal request for aid and fulfilled strict domestic policy conditions.

Speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative conference in New York, Geithner noted the long, difficult road ahead for the euro zone region, saying it will be tested "every month, every week for the next several years."

"There is not going to be a week or a specific date in the future where you are going to know with total confidence how they are going to handle this," Geithner said.

On the U.S. domestic front, Geithner said a balanced mix of reforms is needed for dealing with the so-called "fiscal cliff" of spending cuts and tax rises of about $500 billion that are set to come into effect at the beginning of next year.

Geithner said that although the fiscal cliff is looked at with unease, it is a good opportunity for the United States to address tax and entitlements reform, and that the 2008-2009 financial crisis had been a much harder challenge that what Washington is facing today.

But political gridlock is still a hurdle for the economy.

"You still have a level of political paralysis and uncertainty about whether our political system can find a way to govern again, to govern in ways that would be good for the economy and make growth stronger," said Geithner.

Geithner said there was a lot of "promise" in the U.S. economic recovery, pointing to tentative strength in the housing market and consumers paying down their debt. But he called the drought in the U.S. Midwest "a pretty significant drag on growth."

After 2 Months Squatting At AOL, Eric Simons Launches Claco, The ?GitHub For Teachers?

Screen shot 2012-09-26 at 12.38.19 PMIf you happened to pass through AOL's offices in Palo Alto last November or December, you might have had your first run-in with the elusive creature "founder squatter." Say what? Following in the grand boot-strapping, couch-surfing tradition, last winter, Eric Simons spent two months squatting at AOL's office, sleeping on couches and pilfering Ramen noodles and other snacks left out for employees. Simons was hard at work building Class Connect, a platform on which teachers can post and share lesson plans.

Musicians, from school bands to symphonies, risk hearing loss

? Every weekend in football season, high school marching bands such as Shawnee Mission West in Kansas erupt with joyful noise.

With 200 young musicians in West's band, it's a lot of blowing, pounding and tooting on instruments. Their fortes can rattle the bleachers and rouse the faithful.

But the music is doing more than raising school spirit, it's damaging ears - sometimes for a lifetime. It's not just high school band students at risk, it's anyone who plays an instrument.

Educators striving to reduce risks associated with school activities - such as football concussions and chemistry burns - now are looking at the band room.

Earplugs are joining mouth guards and safety goggles.

Last fall, the National Association of Schools of Music, which accredits more than 640 schools of music, made the topic of health risks associated with playing music a required course for all music schools. Among topics such as overuse and performance anxiety, hearing loss is the biggest concern of all.

One class has been taught at the University of Kansas School of Music, said the dean of music, Robert Walzel, a clarinetist and saxophonist.

"There isn't a one-size-fits-all to the answer of preventing hearing loss," he said. "And we also don't want parents to be scared of music programs, or keep their sixth-grader out of music. Awareness goes a long way."

Awareness arrived last fall at Shawnee Mission North when a band mom and speech pathologist, Karin Soper, was sitting several rows back in the bleachers, feeling her ear drums assaulted. Even neighbors blocks away can hear the band in its morning practices. If it was loud outside, how bad was it inside the band room?

Then she saw the tiny earplugs her son's band director was wearing.

"If the band director was wearing earplugs, what about my son?" she wondered.

Soper called the University of Kansas Medical Center to talk with an audiologist. The audiologist the band room with a dosimeter to measure decibels. West's band director, Bill Thomas, welcomed the science.

"She held it while we played one of our pieces. You could see the needle move into the red zone," Thomas said. He was surprised. The band kids were surprised. At times the levels were dangerously high.

At the University of Kansas, too, some instrumental instructors are wearing dosimeters to measure daily exposure as they teach private lessons in their studios. "Our trombone teacher was really reaching high levels," Walzel noted.

Thomas bought his own meter and installed an app on his smart phone. He tests levels now during practices and performances and inside different venues, just out of curiosity.

"The basketball buzzer that sounds off during pep band ... it's nearly off the chart," he said. He's checked movie theaters. Restaurants.

Noise levels don't just harm when a marching band goes by or a rock group plays. Area sports venues are dangerous places for ears as well. Last fall, Arrowhead Stadium pegged 115 decibels for an average reading. Allen Fieldhouse was at 125 decibels for the duration of the KU-Mizzou game. (Takeoff of a jetliner from nearly 100 feet is about 100 decibels.)

Scientists have known the dangers for years. A 1997 World Health Organization report found that North American children "may receive more noise at school than workers from an eight-hour workday at a factory."

But music hasn't been associated as noise. Research shows that classical musicians are more susceptible to hearing loss than rockers because they rehearse, teach and perform more hours per week. While rock concerts are louder, classical musicians are dosed longer.

Listening to a sound that registers 100 decibels (which can be reached by a flute, for instance) only takes 15 minutes before reaching the maximum daily exposure limit, according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards.

Which raises the question for musicians: To plug or not to plug, and with what?

Comparing earplugs to sunscreen, audiologists say that earplug technology can help block immediate hearing damage. Musicians' earplugs are not supposed to affect the perception of pitch or timbre.

Etymotic Research offers these earplugs. The company also has created an Adopt-a-Band program advertised on its website: "For the price of a slice of pizza and a soda," the site says, "you can provide your favorite musicians the opportunity to play loudly and proudly by giving them the tools and education they need to hear for a lifetime."

The program offers the plugs at a reduced price of about $6. Another perk of the program: Band directors are rewarded with a free custom-fitted $175 pair of plugs, molded to their ears.

West's band director Thomas, who now wears the custom-fitted plugs, is a believer. He keeps also spare pairs of ER-20s in his car and his pocket to hand out when students misplace theirs.

"Spread the gospel," he said. "Wearing earplugs will save your ears."

To Shawnee Mission North's director, Chad Reed, the earplugs aren't perfect but are better than nothing. "Do you know something is in your ears? Well, yeah. But it's well worth the trade-off, especially when I stand before the drum line. I have to have them in. It physically hurts if I don't."

Many high school musicians, however, are leaving the technology in the cases, said Corbin Warner Jr., a 16-year-old drummer from West. Although he wears them, "most everybody here has stopped wearing them."

Kris Chesky, associate professor at the University of North Texas College of Music, and director of the Texas Center of Music & Medicine, believes that Etymotic's ER-20s are a waste of money. "Those specialty musician ear plugs protect no better than the 50-cent foam plugs," he said.

Chesky and his research teams tested the ER-20s and dispute the company's claims.

They distort, he says.

"Research shows that when musicians use ER earplugs, the intensity and timbre of the music they produce is altered.?... Musicians can't wear them and still play well."

Chesky, who plays professional trumpet gigs in the Dallas area, owns three sets of custom earplugs. But when his trumpet comes out, his earplugs stay in the case.

His team collected a year's data using North Texas' nine lab bands, recording sound levels and averages, testing ER-20 earplugs with musicians and nonmusicians. The team has presented its research at conventions across the country and in Europe.

Etymotic has threatened Chesky with legal action. A few months ago, the company sent Chesky a 20-page cease and desist order. But Chesky isn't backing down. Etymotic did not respond to requests for comment.

Angie Reeder, an audiologist at the University of Kansas Medical Center who works with Etymotic, has heard the hearing/comfort/distortion issues before.

"This is the chasm between audiologists and musicians. We think we've found the answer and the technology, and the musicians are telling us, no, not yet. This outlines the importance of collaboration between audiologists, hearing health care providers and musicians to find what works."

Chesky said he will continue sounding the alarm that the joyful noise should be more subdued. He worries that the public will assume plugs are the easy fix.

"The field of music and music education must recognize the limitations of existing products. More than one musician friend has bought expensive ear plugs only to stop using them.

"That breaks my heart."

Chesky advocates one big change that musicians at all levels, from high school to college to professional, need to hear.

Play proudly, just not loudly, he said. "Play musically."

Or pay with hearing loss.

Windows Photo Gallery 2012

Windows Live Photo Gallery's name has become less of a mouthful, now that Microsoft has ditched the "Live" branding. Aside from the name change, Windows Photo Gallery adds a new collage feature and the ability to upload slideshows directly to the Vimeo video sharing site. These join the program's several standout features, such as panorama joining, photo fuse, face recognition, and all the basic photo fixes you'd expect?crop, straighten, retouch, red-eye, along with exposure, noise, and color correction. All of this comes in a very clear, usable interface that makes it easy to share your work. It remains a full-fledged consumer photo editing tool/organizer on a par with the Apple's iPhoto ($15 Direct, 4 stars), Google's Picasa (Free, 4 stars), or ACDSee ($50, 3 stars).

But Photo Gallery still lacks a couple things you'll get in those competitors, including built in maps to show photo geo-location and the ability to edit camera raw files. I also had trouble using it with Apple iCloud's Photo Stream, and the app isn't aware of the EXIF orientation info, so photos display upside down. And like a lot of Microsoft software these days, Photo Gallery only runs in Windows 7 or Windows 8. But luckily, XP and Vista users can still download earlier versions of the program that run on their systems (from the Microsoft's Windows Essentials 2012 help page).

Interface
Windows Photo Gallery feels like a full-blown image editing application, yet manages to maintain its ease of use for general consumers. The main window is adorned with an Office-like ribbon toolbar across the top; and the new Find tab lets you filter by keyword, rating, date, face, and more. Below the ribbon is a three-panel interface, showing your folders on the left, the images in the middle, and actions like tagging and editing in a right pane.

As in more advanced photo apps like Lightroom, double-clicking an image in Windows Photo Gallery brings it up, and doing so again returns you to gallery view. At the bottom right, there are rotate image arrows, next and previous buttons, and a zoom slider that lets you size both thumbnails and single image view to whatever zoom level you want (the mouse wheel can also be used for zooming). Holding the left mouse button lets you pan around the photo, which I found to be a very fluid way of navigating images.

I do wish the left panel offered a Last Import option the way iPhoto does. The Find tab, however, can fill this role; it lets you limit the gallery view by date, month, or year taken, as well as by the people in the pictures, star ratings, and flagged status. You can also click the binocular icon to search within those results. If the default interface doesn't suit you, you can customize it by adding or subtracting options from a quick access toolbar located either below the ribbon or up in the window border to save viewing space.

Photo Importing
The import experience is just what you'd want. As you import, you can group photos by date and time, add tags, add the date to filenames, and now set a base file name. Raw camera files are supported, but only if you've installed your camera manufacturer's codec in Windows. Fortunately, gallery tells you if you need to do this, and it even takes you to the camera manufacturer's download site. As with most photo editors these days, any edits you make don't affect the original imported image, but rather a copy is saved with the edits.

I found working with large raw files slower in Windows Photo Gallery than in pro-level apps like Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 ($299 Street, ), and unlike iPhoto and Picasa image adjustments didn't work with raw images. As I mentioned above, iCloud Photo Stream images shot with an iPhone 4S presented problems for me: I wasn't able to save changes, and the photos displayed upside down.

Photo Editing
All the expected photo adjustments are on offer: cropping, red-eye fixing, straightening, exposure, color correction, and even noise reduction. Buttons let you apply fixes automatically, but a "Fine tune" button offers deeper control (such as an adjustable histogram, highlights, shadows, sharpness, and color temperature). This version adds a new tool: Blemish removal, which worked excellently in my testing, as did the red-eye fix.

An Auto-adjust option lets you configure what you want fixed?any combination of exposure, color, NR, and straightening. It did a mostly good job on my test images, never drastically exaggerating brightness or other factors, as some editors occasionally do. The editing is non-destructive, so, at any point, you can revert to the original. A new batch edit lets you apply fixes to a bunch of selected images at once, but it only works with the auto-fixes?color, exposure, straightening, and noise reduction?not with the fine-tuning.

Face Tagging and Geo-Tagging
Face recognition takes an important role in Photo Gallery. The ribbon bar has a prominent People tag button, and your friends' faces stare up at you from the bar's Quick find area, offering to show all photos featuring them. You get a dropdown showing your contacts (any of which you can assign to the face) when you select an image and choose "Tag as." The face-recognition software becomes increasingly accurate as you identify more people's faces. A "Batch people tag" option opens its own tab and proposes faces of folks you've already tagged. A simple Confirm or Ignore button completes the action, and if there are more pictures the program thinks are of that person, it will keep displaying them till there aren't any more. It's very similar to the way Picasa's face recognition works.

Geotagging works with cameras' built in GPS (such as the iPhone's), or you can manually enter locations. You can sort all geo-tagged photos grouped by location. You can right-click on a geo-tag to see the location in Bing after the browser launches, but there are no maps inside the app, as there are in Picasa and iPhoto. Of course, if you upload geo-tagged photos to Flickr, you can see them placed on a map online.

Up to 2,000 workers brawl at iPhone firm's dorm

Foxconn, which makes Apple's iPhones, suspended production at a factory in China on Monday after a brawl by as many as 2,000 employees at a dormitory injured 40 people.

The fight erupted Sunday night at a privately managed dormitory near a Foxconn Technology Group factory in the northern city of Taiyuan, the company and Chinese police said. A police statement reported by the official Xinhua News Agency said 5,000 officers were dispatched to the scene.

The Taiyuan plant, which employs about 79,000 workers, makes automobile electronic components, consumer electronic components and precision moldings. An employee told Reuters the plant also makes parts and assembles Apple's iPhone 5.

In a statement, Foxconn cited police as saying about 40 people were taken to hospital for medical attention and a number were arrested.

Report: Riots break out at Foxconn factory in China

The company said the incident escalated from what it called a personal dispute between several employees at around 11 p.m. local time (11 a.m. ET) on Sunday. It was brought under control by local police at around 3 a.m.

"The cause of this dispute is under investigation by local authorities and we are working closely with them in this process, but it appears not to have been work-related," Foxconn said.

Burned vehicle
The fight drew "a large crowd of spectators ... triggering chaos," a police spokesman was quoted by Xinhua as saying.

Photos posted on microblog service Sina Weibo showed broken windows, a burned vehicle and police with riot helmets, shields and clubs.

Foxconn also assembles products for Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. It is one of China's biggest employers.

The company has faced scrutiny over complaints in the past about wages and working hours. It raised minimum pay and promised in March to limit hours after an auditor hired by Apple found Foxconn employees regularly were required to work more than 60 hours a week.

But in June, about 100 workers went on a rampage at a Chengdu plant in southwestern China.

A staff member at the Taiyuan plant said he was told the plant could be closed up to two to three days as police investigated.

"There are a lot of police at the site now," the staff member, who asked not to be named because he is not authorized to speak to media, told Reuters by telephone.

Calls to the Taiyuan police were not immediately answered, while an official at the plant declined to comment when reached by telephone.

US State Dept. blasts CNN report on Stevens' diary

(AP) ? CNN reported on the personal journal of slain American ambassador Christopher Stevens over objections from his family, a State Department spokesman said Saturday.

The news channel, in a story posted online Saturday, said that it found a journal belonging to Stevens four days after he died in a Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Three other Americans also were killed.

CNN broke a pledge to the late ambassador's family that it wouldn't report on the diary, said State Department spokesman Philippe Reines, a senior adviser to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

In a blistering statement, Reines called CNN's actions "indefensible."

The channel said in the story online that it took "newsworthy tips" from Stevens' diary and confirmed them with other sources. Citing an unidentified source "familiar with Stevens' thinking," CNN said that the ambassador was concerned about security threats in Benghazi and a "rise in Islamic extremism."

In a statement Saturday, CNN defended its use of the journal's contents and asked "why is the State Department now attacking the messenger."

"CNN did not initially report on the existence of a journal out of respect for the family, but we felt there were issues raised in the journal which required full reporting, which we did," the channel said.

The public has a right to know what CNN learned from "multiple sources" about fears and warnings of a terror threat before the Benghazi attack, the channel said, "which are now raising questions about why the State Department didn't do more to protect Ambassador Stevens and other U.S. personnel."

Stevens' family was informed within hours about the discovery of the journal, a hard-bound book that included seven handwritten pages. It was returned to them via a third party, according to CNN's online story.

An Italian official took control of the diary from CNN in Benghazi at the State Department's request, and it is en route back to Stevens' family, the department said.

"Given the truth of how this was handled, CNN patting themselves on the back is disgusting," Reines said in his statement.

"Whose first instinct is to remove from a crime scene the diary of a man killed along with three other Americans serving our country, read it, transcribe it, email it around your newsroom for others to read" and then call the family?" Reines asked.

In a phone call with the Stevens family, CNN "agreed to abide by the clear wishes of the Stevens family, and pledged not to use the diary or even allude to its existence until hearing back from the family," Reines said.

But four days later, "they just went ahead and used it," he said.

The diary was first mentioned on-air Friday by Anderson Cooper, following previous CNN reports that Stevens feared he was on an "al-Qaida hit list" but did not mention the journal. Cooper said that some of the information in the reports was based on Stevens' personal journal, which he said CNN came across in its reporting.

In its online story, CNN said it found the journal on the "floor of the largely unsecured consulate compound where he was fatally wounded."

Asked to comment on CNN's report that Stevens was concerned about a "hit list," Reines referred to a news conference last Thursday at which Clinton was asked about it.

"I have absolutely no information or reason to believe that there's any basis for that," Clinton had said.

Genea-Musings: The Problem with FamilySearch Family Tree

Genea-Musings: The Problem with FamilySearch Family Tree

The Problem with FamilySearch Family Tree

I posted back in July about trying to get the Benjamin Seaver (1791-1825) family correct in FamilySearch Family Tree (see?Sorting Out Benjamin Seaver (1791-1825) on?FamilySearch?Family?Tree?and?Getting Benjamin Seaver (1791-1825) Right on?FamilySearch?Family?Tree).

It was very difficult to figure out how to, and then execute the process, to get the right parents, the right spouse, and the right children for Benjamin Seaver. ?There were multiple sets of parents, spouses and children for this one person who, from my research, had one set of parents, one spouse, and one set of four children.

I've been going through some of my families on FamilySearch Family Tree, trying to clean them up as best I can, but it seems to take a long time. ?The hope is that FamilySearch will come up with an easier way to do this - and I beta tested one month ago the "Combine Persons" feature that has not yet been released. ?That worked, and so I decided to wait to do any more cleanup until that feature was released.

I thought that it might be educational to others thinking about using the FamilySearch Family Tree to see what the basic problem is. ?My definition of the problem is that: "There is all of this data for a single person in the Family Tree from undocumented sources - both from Ancestral File trees submitted by LDS members, and extracted data submitted to the International Genealogical Index."

Here is one example - my 7th great-grandfather, Joseph Seaver (1672-1754) of Massachusetts (4 contiguous screens).

As you can see, there are 7 alternate names, ten children, two extra marriages, and four parental families for Joseph Seaver. ?He actually had 6 children, one spouse, and one set of parents. Oh, the name of his father is wrong too! ?This is typical for persons with multiple submissions in Ancestral File and the IGI. ?However, some of the alternate names were used in the records.

I have done some cleanup on the items above, as you can see in the "Latest Changes" box in the first screen above. ?I may do some more and try to measure how long it takes to do this task so that I can compare it later when the FSFT "Combine Persons" feature works well.

I thought that I would try to add some source citations before I deleted the alternate names, the extra marriages and the extra parents. ?However, I decided not to do that until a Source citation synchronization is available though RootsMagic 5 (I'm assuming (hoping!) that Bruce is working on this...) because of the time it takes to do even a copy and paste process in the FSFT Source citations. ?I could use the My SourceBox feature on FamilySearch to add sources, but I haven't done that yet for Joseph Seaver.

What isn't shown in the list above are all of the bits of data for each Fact. ?Here is the screen for the Marriage data for Joseph Seaver and Mary Read (2 screens):

There are 15 marriage entries on the list. ?The correct date, according to the Sudbury, Massachusetts vital record book (page 265), for the marriage of Joseph Severs and Mary Reed is 13 October 170[torn]: ?

It is certainly either 13 October 1700 or 1701, since their first child was born on 29 October 1702. I think that it's probably 13 October 1700. ?Unfortunately, the Sudbury births, marriages and deaths are not yet available in the Massachusetts Town Records on Ancestry.com; they might enable researchers to narrow down the year, even though the page is likely torn.

In the list of marriage dates in FamilySearch Family Tree, some of the entries give the year as "0170" due to the lack of a fourth number for the year. ?When I clean up this person's information, I will have to delete all of the wrong ones above and make sure that I source the correct date. ?I'm wondering how I should add the date - should I say 13 October 1700 or 1701? ?

Libya orders militias to disband, report says

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Libya's army has given militias and armed groups 48 hours to leave military compounds, state property and properties of members of the former regime in Tripoli and surrounding areas, the official LANA news agency said on Sunday.

The announcement came after the Islamist Ansar al-Sharia militia was swept out of its bases in the eastern city of Benghazi on Friday in a surge of anger against the armed groups that still control large parts of Libya more than a year after the overthrow of Moammar Gadhafi.

Omar Turbi, a California-based analyst of Libya, told regional news channel Al Jazeera that the "demonstrations ... were a clear indication that the majority of the Libyan people are not in favor of extremism".

The army ordered "all individuals and armed groups occupying military compounds, public buildings or property belonging to members of the former regime to evacuate these sites within 48 hours", threatening to use force if the groups did not comply, LANA said.

U.S. officials praise the Libyan government for its response to the attack on the American consulate, but they're more critical of the Egyptian response to violent protests at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

It added that the army had already dislodged a militia from a military complex on the highway leading to Tripoli's international airport on Sunday. It did not name the militia but said the army had arrested its members and seized its weapons.

Protesting Libyans storm militant compound in backlash against armed groups

Friday's invasion of Ansar al-Sharia's compounds, which met little resistance, appeared to be part of a sweep of militia bases by police, troops and activists following a large demonstration against militia units in Benghazi on Friday.

On Saturday, two Islamist militias in the eastern town of Derna, long seen as an Islamist stronghold, announced they were disbanding and evacuating their compounds.

Libya's new rulers have struggled to impose their authority on the myriad of armed groups that have so far refused to lay down their arms, and in fact rely on many of them to provide security.

Reds beat Dodgers 6-0, clinch NL Central

CINCINNATI (AP) ? General manager Walt Jocketty hit the "send" button on his cellphone right at the final out, informing his manager that the Reds' championship celebration was on.

And with a familiar swing getting them there.

Jay Bruce was Cincinnati's Mr. Clinch again, hitting the homer that started the Reds toward a 6-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday that made good on their second try for the title. The only thing missing was the manager.

Dusty Baker spent another day in a Chicago hospital getting treated for an irregular heartbeat. Jocketty texted congratulations to the 63-year-old Baker on his fifth division title as a manager, including two during the last three years with Cincinnati.

"He is here everywhere," owner Bob Castellini said, standing in the middle of a soaked clubhouse that had beer and champagne dripping from the ceiling. "He is here in spirit, and everybody knows he's here. We hope to see him tomorrow."

The players toasted Baker before drenching each other.

"It's a shame he's not here," third baseman Scott Rolen said. "He digs this stuff. He's missed, there's no doubt about that."

The Reds videotaped the celebration, along with best wishes, to send to Baker. When they clinched two years ago, Baker wound up in the middle of a players' huddle, getting joyously soaked.

The 2010 party started with a dramatic Bruce homer, a first-pitch leadoff shot in the ninth against Houston's Tim Byrdak. On Saturday, he led off the fourth inning with a first-pitch homer off rookie Stephen Fife (0-2), putting Cincinnati ahead to stay with his team-leading 34th of the season.

"It's not the same as two years ago, but I'll take it," Bruce said. "We've been taking care of business for quite a while, so we knew this was coming. Today is a nutshell of what we've been doing all season."

Mat Latos (13-4) allowed six hits and didn't walk a batter in eight innings. Left-hander Aroldis Chapman made his first appearance since Sept. 10 ? a tired shoulder had sidelined him ? and finished it off by getting Hanley Ramirez to hit into a double play off a 99 mph fastball.

The celebration was on, though more subdued than two years ago.

"A couple of years ago, we were a surprise," said Joey Votto, who was the NL MVP that season. "It kind of crept up on us. We didn't expect it. This year, we felt we had something to prove."

As the Reds closed in on the final outs, second baseman Brandon Phillips pretended he was shaking a bottle of champagne and spraying it everywhere while sitting on the bench in the dugout. Phillips says the only other time he's had champagne was during the 2010 clubhouse celebration.

After the final out, players formed a huddle to the side of the mound, with pitcher Johnny Cueto spraying them with a bottle of water. An attendant rolled out a cart of gray championship shirts and hats.

Cincinnati became the first team in the majors to clinch a division title this season, leaving it with one goal left. The Reds are vying with Washington for the NL's top seed in the playoffs, both with 92 wins that lead the majors.

It's unclear when Baker will be back. The three-time manager of the year also won division titles with the Giants and Cubs. Baker reached the World Series once as a manager, losing a Game 7 against the Angels in 2002, his final season in San Francisco.

The Reds had their first opportunity to take the title on Friday night, but lost 3-1 to the Dodgers in 10 innings. Bruce had a chance to win it with another game-ending homer, but struck out leading off the ninth.

A day later, Bruce connected, Phillips added a solo homer, and rookie Todd Frazier singled home a run for more than enough. The Reds added three runs in the eighth, aided by reliever Jamey Wright's throwing error.

The Dodgers lost for the 11th time in 16 games, a swoon that has dropped them out of a wild-card spot. They trail St. Louis by three games and Milwaukee by a half-game for the final playoff berth.

Cincinnati's 92nd win is another high point under Baker, who took over in 2008 when the club was rebuilding with young stars Bruce, Votto and Cueto. The Reds improved each of the first two seasons, then became champions ahead of schedule by winning 91 games in 2010 to secure their first postseason appearance in 15 years.

Their inexperience showed in the playoffs, where the Reds got no-hit by Roy Halladay and swept by the Phillies in three games.

Things unraveled last year, when the front office decided to bring the team back virtually intact rather than upgrading its problem areas. Three of the five starting pitchers got hurt or sick during spring training, and several veterans had disappointing seasons, resulting in a third-place finish.

Cincinnati learned from its mistakes. The Reds traded two former first-round picks and starter Edinson Volquez to San Diego for Latos. Then they gave Votto an extra 10 years and $225 million on his contract.

The investments paid off in the first year.

"It's special because we've been there, we've done that," Castellini said. "We've also known how to get blown out in three (playoff) games. We don't feel we're going to let that happen again. I know we all feel that way. We're pretty confident. We'll see what happens."

Baker did some of his best managing during the season. The back end of the bullpen ? closer Ryan Madson, setup relievers Nick Masset and Bill Bray ? got wiped out by injuries during spring training. Baker eased Chapman into the unfamiliar closer's role, and he set a club record with 27 consecutive saves.

The gloomiest moment became a turning point.

Votto was the only consistent hitter going into July. He tore cartilage in his right knee and needed two operations. Baker was forced to juggle his lineup and batting order, trying to figure a way to make up for Votto's productivity and stay in the race for the next six weeks.

It worked beautifully. The Reds went 32-16 without Votto, pulling into a commanding lead in the NL Central. They were closing in on clinching the division when they went to Chicago this week, then had another setback. Baker felt bad on Wednesday and was taken to a Chicago hospital for treatment of his irregular heartbeat.

If Phillips gets his way, Baker won't miss out on the celebration entirely.

"I was looking forward to splashing some stuff in his face," Phillips said. "I saved a bottle to splash on him when he gets back."

NOTES: Los Angeles plans to start RHP Aaron Harang on short rest Sunday rather than go with LHP Clayton Kershaw, who hasn't pitched in a game since Sept. 11 because of a sore hip. He threw 20 pitches in the bullpen on Friday without problem. ... Dodgers C A.J. Ellis grounded out twice, extending his slump to 0 for 28.

Improving Your Home The Effective Way | Exact Article

If you really find this article helpful Give it a PLUS from below and help us to spread it.

Home improvement projects make images of buckets filled with paint, dust, construction, and other stressful thoughts. While this is one type of home improvement project, not all are so involved. Start with small things, like remodeling a guest bathroom, to see if it is something that you have the capacity for.

When you are selecting a paint color for your home, be sure to make use of a light box or the sample cards at the hardware store. Many paint colors appear different under natural lighting, fluorescent lighting (common in most retail establishments), and incandescent lighting. You will be more pleased with your final choice if you make sure the color is what you expect once you take it home.

Make sure that you seal the grout after you have laid the tile. Grout is porous. If you do not seal it, moisture can seep into the grout, promoting mold and mildew. Unsealed grout also stains easily. If you seal the grout, not only will it save you time in cleaning your tiles, but it can potentially save you money in costly repairs resulting from mildew problems.

If the closets in your home are not very large, it would be a excellent thought for you to use organizers if you are trying to sell your home. Doing so will make the closets in your home seem much larger and a lot of buyers will bypass homes that seem to have too small space.

You need to lay down drop clothes or ancient sheets when you are going to be painting a room. Many people do not realize how hard it can be to get up paint once it has splattered onto a carpet or hard wood floor. Laying down covering is a quick and simple fix that can make a huge difference.

If you have a broken glass window, you can try this temporary solution to prevent bugs from entering. Use a bit of plastic cling wrap over the broken area to close the opening. Secure it with a bit of tape to make a better seal. This is really a temporary solution and should not be used long term.

If your shower and bathtub seem to be building up mildew, or leaking a small bit, it may be time for you to re-caulk. Removing your ancient caulk and putting in new should really be done once a year as your typical bathroom maintenance. You can buy calk from any hardware store for a very reasonable price.

One of the smallest improvements to your home with the largest impact is a deep cleaning of the house. Spending the time to clean every section of your house will improve the overall smell, look, and environment of your home. A thorough cleaning is often overlooked as a cost effective method of home improvement.

If you are in need of space in your bathroom, you know that the two things taking it up are usually the bathtub and the sink. Opt to install a pedestal sink in a small bathroom instead of one with cabinets on the bottom. It not only gives your bathroom an expensive appearance, but also frees up much needed space.

We have a home which is over 100 years ancient and updating it has been an ongoing process over the past five years. We have a new dining room, two new bathrooms and half of a new kitchen. Recently, my husband installed four new windows and place new siding on half of the house. I can?t wait for the whole thing to be done!

Giants' magic number for clinching West down to 2

By JOSH DUBOW

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:22 a.m. ET Sept. 22, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - It was only fitting that Buster Posey delivered another big hit on a night he was honored again.

Posey hit a tiebreaking RBI single after receiving a prestigious award before the game and the San Francisco Giants reduced their magic number for clinching the NL West to two with a 5-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday.

Posey was recognized in a pregame ceremony with the "Willie Mac" award as the most inspirational player on the team. The 2010 NL Rookie of the Year then delivered another big hit when he drove in Marco Scutaro with a single off Casey Kelly (2-2) that gave San Francisco a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning.

"He's done that a few times this year," manager Bruce Bochy said. "Tremendous player. He was honored to receive that award. What a great player he is on both sides. He's done such a great job for us. He's done all the little things."

Posey helped Ryan Vogelsong (13-9) match his career high in wins and put the Giants in position to clinch a division title as early as Saturday. San Francisco would win the West on Saturday night with a win if the Los Angeles Dodgers lose earlier in the day to Cincinnati.

"It's in our hands," Bochy said. "When you're in this situation you want to go out there and take care of business. You want to get in through the front door not the back door."

Pablo Sandoval belted his fourth home run in three days, and Brandon Crawford and Scutaro had RBI singles as San Francisco matched a season high with its fifth straight win.

Chase Headley hit a solo shot for his 29th homer for the Padres. But he was thrown out at home trying to score the tying run on Yasmani Grandal's two-out double in the sixth. The Giants cut him down with a well-executed relay from left fielder Gregor Blanco to Crawford to Posey, who fielded the throw on a short hop and tagged Headley to preserve a 2-1 lead.

"We really didn't swing the bats very good tonight against Vogelsong," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Other than Chase, we really didn't threaten them. Vogelsong did a nice job. His curveball was working tonight as was his changeup. We couldn't mount any pressure."

Vogelsong, who had a 10.31 ERA over his past seven starts, reversed his recent slide by allowing just one run and five hits in six innings.

"I'm going to sleep for the first time in about a month tonight. I can tell you that," Vogelsong said. "I'd been trying to tweak some stuff here for a while. I finally found something that felt comfortable and easy to repeat. Somehow I got twisted around there along the way. It took me a while to get back into something that felt right."

The Giants broke it open with three runs in the sixth, capped by Sandoval's homer. After going 161 at-bats without a long ball, Sandoval has regained his power stroke this week and now has 12 homers this season.

It was a big day all around for Posey, who won the award named after Hall of Famer Willie McCovey that is voted upon annually by Giants players, coaches, training staff and the fans.

Posey also got a boost in his bid to win the batting title when teammate Melky Cabrera requested to be disqualified from the NL honor. Major League Baseball and the players' association agreed to a one-season-only change in the rule governing the individual batting, slugging and on-base percentage champions.

Serving a 50-game suspension after testing positive for testosterone, Cabrera leads the league with a .346 average. Cabrera had 501 plate appearances, one short of the required minimum if the Giants play 162 games, but would have won the title under section 10.22(a) of the Official Baseball Rules if an extra hitless at-bat were added to his average and he still finished ahead. With Friday's agreement, that provision won't apply this year to a player who "served a drug suspension for violating the Joint Drug Program."

Posey, who is hitting .335, trails Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen by three points for the NL lead with less than two weeks left in the regular season.

"Personal achievements and accomplishments are always nice," Posey said. "Being fortunate enough to win a World Series in 2010 and knowing how much fun that was and this year with the guys on the team and the whole city. Ultimately that's where I get the most satisfaction."

NOTES: Kelly allowed two runs and seven hits in 4 1-3 innings. ... Headley's 21 HRs since the All-Star break are the second-most in San Diego history, trailing the 28 by Ken Caminiti in 1996. ... The Padres reinstated closer Huston Street from the DL before the game. He had been out since Aug. 11 with a strained left calf. ... Grandal left the game in the seventh inning after taking a foul ball off his mask. ... The Giants autographed a hat for 49ers QB Alex Smith, who had been fined $15,000 last season by the NFL for sporting a Giants hat after games - though the fine was later dropped. INF Ryan Theriot also bought 49ers hats for his teammates. ... Madison Bumgarner (15-10) starts the middle game of the series on Saturday against San Diego's Andrew Werner (2-1).
