Iran test-fires missiles near Strait of Hormuz

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's navy said Monday it test-fired a range of weapons during ongoing maneuvers near the Strait of Hormuz, the passageway for one-fifth of the world's oil supply.

IRNA quoted Adm. Amir Rastgari, spokesman for the exercise, as saying the Iranian-made air defense system Raad, or Thunder, was among the weapons tested, along with various torpedoes and underwater and surface-to-surface rockets as well as anti-ship missiles. The Islamic Republic said it also deployed domestically-made hovercraft during the operation.

The Raad system was on show during a military parade in Tehran in September for the first time. Iran says is more advanced than its Russian predecessor and is designed to confront fighter jets, cruise missiles, smart bombs, helicopters and drones. Iran said the system fires missiles with a range of 50 kilometers (30 miles), capable of hitting targets at 22,000 meters (75,000 feet).

Tehran has tried to build a self-sufficient military program since 1992. It frequently announces technological breakthroughs, most of which cannot be confirmed independently.

Iran's military leaders have recently said they believe future wars will be air- and sea-based and Tehran has sought to upgrade its air defense systems and naval power in anticipation of such a possibility.

The drill began on Friday and ends on Wednesday, one of a number of exercises Iran holds annually.

The maneuvers come as the West increases its pressure over Iran's nuclear program. Iran has said in the past it might close the strait over Western sanctions or military threats against its nuclear facilities, but has stepped back from those threats in recent months.

Both the United States and Israel have not ruled out a military strike against Iran's nuclear program, which the West believes is aimed at weapons development.

Iran denies the charge, insisting its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes like power generation and cancer treatment.

Jeffrey Cufaude, Idea Architects: What I Learned from Speaking at ...

Given that I do a fair amount of public speaking each year, I wasn?t overly concerned about appearing onstage at TEDx Indianapolis.? But most of my work is done in half-day or full-day facilitated workshops or 60-minute keynotes, not a 10-minute presentation.? And while some of what I?ve gleaned presenting 5-minute IGNITE talks (on innovation and on personal priorities) applied, I learned (and relearned) a few important lessons.?

Edit ruthlessly.?

Good writing requires great editing.? This was instilled in me during my undergraduate academic work in English and reinforced throughout my professional career writing for journals and trade publications.? My initial presentation drafts tried to cover far more major themes than the final version.? Even it might have tried to do too much given the time constraints.

My editing process consisted of asking myself four questions repeatedly:??

  1. What?s the bottom line I want people to think about and act on?? ?
  2. Why is this point (this example) important to include?
  3. Will the overall impact be lessened if it is removed completely?
  4. Is there a better way to show rather than tell the point I am trying to make?
Matthew May's new book, The Law of Subtraction, explores the power of editing and constraints for innovation.? I'll be writing more about it in the near future, but for now you should visit his website and watch some of the video clips that highlight the book's content.
? ?
Make the most of metaphors and stories.

It was great to speak with attendees after my talk and hear them bring up specific examples of what resonated with them: some mentioned the Edward deBono quote about crayons, some spoke about the bagged lettuce example, some noted Sondheim and George Seurat references.? I had chosen each of these metaphors or stories as memorable anchors to encapsulate the major points I was trying to make.?

    Honor your voice.?

My work is almost always experiential and interactive: it's what I am known for contributing.? But I initially told myself there was no way to bring that to play in a 10-minute stage presentation with 500 people.? So my first presentation design included nothing of the sort, and I hated it.? It felt flat.? Worse yet, it didn?t feel like me and I knew I wouldn?t enjoy giving it.

Talking with a few colleagues helped me see a way into bringing more of who I am and what I believe into the presentation.? This resulted in the silent opening, perhaps the most terrifying 40 seconds I?ve ever had speaking in public.? But it achieved my primary objective: turning passive spectators into engaged learners while illustrating the main theme of my talk.? It was counterintuitive and somewhat risky, but thankfully, it worked pretty well.?

    Preparation can vary.

In talking with the other speakers, I was fascinated at the varied approaches they had used to prepare their presentation: writing it out almost verbatim, using a lengthy slide deck to tell the story, rehearsing repeatedly in front of family and friends.? Some people are great at making intensely rehearsed remarks seem fresh.? I'm not.

So my approach was somewhat different.? The first and only time I went through the entire talk was the day I actually delivered it at the conference. (I've yet to watch the video of it and most likely never will). Being present is a key part of my commitment as a facilitator, and as a speaker I didn?t want to be so scripted and polished that the talk could almost be delivered on autopilot.

Instead, my rehearsal consisted of crafting the language around what I labeled ?set pieces,? the key one or two minute segments in which each thought or story was introduced.? I then ran through those enough times to get a feel for the words and the rhythm that mattered most.? I wanted their transitions and connections to simply emerge from me onstage guided by what felt right in the moment.

While slightly unorthodox in approach, I hadn?t really been too concerned about it until I received this text from a friend a few days before the event:

How goes the preparation for what might be the most important 600 seconds of your entire professional career?

(Note to self: get new friends in 2013.? LOL).

My friend was joking, of course.? It?s not like I was speaking on the mainstage at the TED Conference in Long Beach (um, Chris Anderson, I?m available though). And I?ve long believed that what a speaker should fear most is not an appropriate level of nervousness or performance anxiety when heading onstage, but instead, the absence of it.? The moment we think we have it all figured out ... that nothing can go wrong ... is the moment that everything unravels.? This is as true for speaking on a stage as it is interacting with a friend or colleague. You can't rehearse authenticity.

Good speaking (or facilitating) is ultimately about good relationships.? Good relationships require being human.? So whether it is the stage at a conference or the stage on which you appear in life, it?s not about performing: it?s about you.? Share your story.? Speak on your terms.? What others make of it is beyond your control.?

And that is the ultimate lesson I hope never to forget.

Car Insurance Fraud: What You Ought to Know - Premier Group ...

Colorado car insuranceCar insurance fraud is a growing problem that affects everyone. The money car insurance companies lose to fraudulent claims gets passed to consumers through higher insurance policy rates. You can also directly lose money if you are the victim of auto insurance fraud by having to pay deductibles and policy rate increases. Protect your finances by learning to identify car insurance fraud and how to protect yourself from becoming a victim.

What Is Car Insurance Fraud?
There are many types of car insurance fraud. Car insurance fraud ranges from people lying to insurance providers to get cheaper rates to organized crime rings that stage fake auto accidents to collect money from insurance companies. Some common types of insurance fraud are:

  • Insurance policy scams:?Fake insurance salesman sell bogus insurance policies to unsuspecting consumers
  • Inflated claims: Claiming more damage than actually occurred to collect more money
  • Fraudulent theft or damage: Having someone steal or burn a vehicle to collect money from the insurance company
  • Staged Accidents: Staging an auto accident and claiming false injuries
  • Runners: A scam where someone (the runner) directs a victim of an auto accident to a fake medical facility that will fake medical claims

How to Avoid Becoming a Victim of Car Insurance Fraud

Watch out

  • Purchasing car insurance: Only purchase car insurance policies from licensed insurance companies or licensed insurance brokers and get a written copy of your policy (including what it covers). Read your policy to get a thorough understanding of what it covers.
  • While driving:?Keep plenty of distance between your car and cars in front of you. Trust your instincts. If another vehicle is acting suspiciously by driving erratically or too close to you, call the police and pull into a safe spot such as a police station or gas station.
  • After an accident:?Call the police and your insurance company immediately after an accident, no matter how minor the damage and get a police report or the incident.
  • Avoiding scams:?Never sign a blank insurance claim form. Be weary of bystanders, towing companies, medical professionals, or auto repair shops that try to pressure you to go to a certain facility for service or treatment, or try to pressure you to file false claims.

We can help you purchase a Colorado car insurance policy that fits your specific needs at affordable rates, and will provide you with continued service to prevent you from becoming a victim to insurance fraud. Call us at Premier Group Insurance today to get started.

Net loss: Brooklyn fires coach Avery Johnson

NEW YORK (AP) ? Avery Johnson was fired Thursday as coach of the Brooklyn Nets, who have fallen to .500 in their season of new surroundings and elevated expectations.

General manager Billy King announced the dismissal in a statement. Assistant P.J. Carlesimo will coach the Nets at home Friday against Charlotte, according to someone with knowledge of the plans. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because details were to be provided at a news conference later in the day.

"The Nets ownership would like to express thanks to Avery for his efforts and to wish him every success in the future," owner Mikhail Prokhorov said in a statement.

After a strong start to their first season in Brooklyn, the Nets have lost 10 of 13 games to fall well behind the first-place New York Knicks, the team they so badly want to compete with in their new home.

But after beating the Knicks in their first meeting Nov. 26, probably the high point of Johnson's tenure, the Nets went 5-10 and frustrations have been mounting.

The Nets were embarrassed by Boston on national TV on Christmas, then were routed by Milwaukee 108-93 on Wednesday night for their fifth loss in six games.

Star guard Deron Williams recently complained about Johnson's offense, and Nets CEO Brett Yormark took to Twitter after the loss to Celtics to voice his displeasure with the performance.

Brooklyn started the season 11-4, winning five in a row to end November, when Johnson was Eastern Conference coach of the month. But he couldn't do anything to stop this slump, one the Nets never anticipated after a $350 million summer spending spree they believed would take them toward the top of their conference.

Johnson has been the Nets' coach for a little more than two seasons. He went 60-116 with the Nets, who moved from New Jersey to Brooklyn to start the 2012-13 season. Johnson coached the Dallas Mavericks to a spot in the NBA Finals in 2006.

This is the NBA's second coaching change this season following the dismissal of Mike Brown by the Los Angeles Lakers.

Johnson arrived in New Jersey with a 194-70 record, a .735 winning percentage that was the highest in NBA history, but had little chance of success in his first two seasons while the Nets focused all their planning on the move to Brooklyn.

They looked to make a splash this summer when they re-signed Williams and fellow starters Gerald Wallace, Brook Lopez and Kris Humphries, traded for Atlanta All-Star Joe Johnson, and added veteran depth with players such as Reggie Evans, C.J. Watson and Andray Blatche.

Johnson didn't have a contract beyond this season but seemed to have the confidence of Prokhorov, the Russian billionaire who before the season said he had faith in "the Avery defense system."

Some predicted the Nets would finish as high as second in the East behind defending champion Miami, and the projections seemed warranted when the Nets started quickly amid much fanfare. But all the good publicity faded in recent weeks once the losing started.

Williams, who has struggled this season, stirred the waters when he expressed his preference for the offense he ran under Jerry Sloan in Utah before a loss to the Jazz. Williams and Johnson, nicknamed "Brooklyn's Backcourt" and expected to be one of the best in the NBA, have shot poorly and rarely meshed.

The Nets were embarrassed near the end of their 93-76 loss to Boston, when fans exited early amid a chant of "Let's go Celtics!"

"Nets fans deserved better," Yormark tweeted after the game. "The entire organization needs to work harder to find a solution. We will get there."

Not under Johnson, though.

The Nets should be able to entice a big-name coach with Prokhorov's billions and the chance to play in a major market at Barclays Center, the $1 billion arena that has drawn praise in the city and from visiting teams.

Cliff Hanger: Washington Tries for Last-Minute Deal - Politics - CBN ...

With the edge of the fiscal cliff in sight there's still no deal in Washington.

The news comes as President Obama hosts a meeting Friday in a last ditch effort to break the stalemate with the Republican-dominated Congress.

"I have to be very honest. I don't know time-wise how it can happen now," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said.
???
If there is no deal by Jan. 1, every American will see their taxes go up and automatic spending cuts will be implemented.
????
Republicans continue to blame Democrats for the standoff, saying there are limits to compromise.

"Republicans aren't about to write a blank check on anything Senate Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff. That wouldn't be fair to the American people," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, said.
????
Democrats blasted Republicans, insisting that taxes increase only for the wealthy Americans and made it clear they're unwilling to compromise on spending cuts.

"The Republicans in the House have left town. The negotiations between the president and the speaker have fallen apart as they have for the last three-and-a-half years. We've tried mightily to get something done," Reid said.

"The American people have a right to be very upset with this Congress," Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., charged.

Neither side appears confident a deal will be reached.
????
Nevertheless, the president is scheduled to meet with the top four congressional leaders Friday, and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, called the House back into session for a rare Sunday session.

Meanwhile, the country is set to reach its debt ceiling limit come Monday.
???
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says he's working on a temporary fix. But economists worry this could plunge the United States back into a recession.

The Best "White Christmas": Otis vs. Elvis

Let's get one thing straight right away: "White Christmas" is the best Christmas song. It has tradition, nostalgia, and romance. No church. There are more versions of it that you could ever care to hear—Bing Crosby's original 1941 performance is a classic, Frank Sinatra's 1944 version is good enough, and the Drifters' 1954 recording is doo-woppy and fun. Home Based Business And Taxes! What You Need To Know ...

There are few people that have not dreamed of the astonishing possibilities afforded by creating a home business enterprise. The idea of setting your own work schedule and being your own supervisor is very tempting. This is a good way to find a plan that works for you.

You volume of phone calls will increase dramatically when you start your home business. You will probably want an extra phone line that is dedicated to your business. An additional phone allows you to turn off the ringer if you do not wish to be disturbed about business matters.

Go above and beyond when trying to please your customers. Include a special gift and a thank you note when you send them their order. Always remind them that you are grateful for doing business with you. Customers want to feel appreciated, and they also enjoy getting a free something. Show them that you do not take their business for granted.

TIP! Try to avoid taking out large loans when starting a home business. It is not worth the risk of ruining your relationship.

Take the time to figure out your total costs to produce your product. Not knowing the exact figure can lead to you losing money. Generally, companies charge wholesale buyers double what the item cost to make. Two times the price of the wholesale cost equals the standard retail markup. You will need to price the item accordingly, so that you can be sure that you are making a profit off of the sale of the product.

If you plan to provide any type of service, you should make it a point to use contracts. By using contracts, both parties will understand what is to be expected of them in regards to a transaction. It also serves as a legal document for resolving any disputes in case something goes wrong with the deal.

As you can see, it will require a little bit of work and dedication to make the jump. If you can manage to pull through and stick to the plan, you will be able to accurately represent your dream in the company?s image and create something that is long-lasting and profitable over the years.

TIP! People should be able to contact you by telephone, mail or email. Keep up with your contacts.

Debt deal needed to ensure bailout exit ? Taoiseach

Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD said he expects Ireland will return fully to bond markets late next year.

In an interview in advance of the country taking over the EU presidency for a six-month period he stressed that a deal on easing bank debt is necessary to ensure a successful bailout exit.

"We would hope to be the first country to actually exit in 2013 but that level of support that has been committed to Ireland is very necessary to be carried through.

"This assistance and this support is very necessary for Ireland to exit the programme."

The Taoiseach also said the Government would not seek a second bailout.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) ? Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is listed as probable for Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Or, as coach Mike Shanahan put it: "There is a very, very good chance he is going to play."

Griffin went through a full practice Friday for the third straight day after missing last week's win over the Cleveland Browns with a sprained right knee.

Fellow rookie Kirk Cousins filled in, making his first career start in a 38-21 victory.

Less certain for Sunday's game are defensive end Stephen Bowen and right tackle Tyler Polumbus. Bowen has a torn upper biceps, and Polumbus is recovering from a concussion. Both are listed as questionable.

Report blames chaos, not cover-up, for BBC scandal

LONDON (AP) ? A BBC review has absolved senior executives of trying to bury an explosive story about one of its best-known children's television stars, saying management errors were to blame for the fact that a planned expose on pedophilia allegations against the late Jimmy Savile was canceled.

Institutional chaos and confusion ? but not a cover-up ? were to blame for the BBC's disastrous decision to scupper the "Newsnight" program, the review found Wednesday.

"The 'Newsnight' investigators got the story right," Nick Pollard, who led the review, told journalists following its publication. "They had found clear and compelling evidence that Jimmy Savile was a pedophile."

When the rival ITV network broadcast a similar expose in October about Savile, who died in 2011 at age 84, the BBC came under fire for both harboring an alleged serial sex abuser for decades and for killing its own story about him.

The scandal quickly metastasized, tainting the reputation of the BBC ? the publicly-funded British broadcaster known worldwide for its news and entertainment divisions. It also prompted the resignation of the BBC's brand new director-general, George Entwistle, and raised questions about its former leader, Mark Thompson, who has since become chief executive at The New York Times.

The BBC's decision to cancel its initial investigation was particularly embarrassing, since it preceded a glowing tribute program honoring Savile's career. A host of misleading and contradictory statements about the investigation in the weeks that followed only deepened suspicion that senior executives had tried to bury the story to protect the corporation's reputation.

Pollard cleared the executives of that ? the most serious ? charge, saying that although the decision to scrap the program "was clearly flawed ... I believe it was taken in good faith."

Pollard had a harsh verdict on the BBC's behavior in the aftermath of the scandal, saying the corporation took more than a month to get its story straight in the midst of what he called "a complete breakdown of communication."

"There was a critical lack of leadership and coordination," he said, describing an atmosphere of recrimination, mistrust, and mismanagement. Pollard even quoted James Hardy, the then-BBC communications chief, as promising to "drip poison" about one of the "Newsnight" reporters he suspected of leaking stories to the press.

The review ? which cost the BBC about 2 million pounds (roughly $3.3 million) ? had harsh words for several executives in particular. One of those criticized, the BBC's Deputy Director of News Steve Mitchell, announced his resignation as the report was made public.

The BBC said that other members of staff still faced disciplinary action or were being moved to new jobs.

Pollard's report does not appear to challenge Thompson's account of his role in the scandal, which has disquieted some at The New York Times. Chris Patten, head of the BBC Trust, said after the review was published that he has "no reason at all for disbelieving" the former director general.

Meanwhile, the scandal over Savile continues to draw more arrests. So far eight suspects have been questioned, the latest on Wednesday when police said that a man in his 70s had been detained in connection with the investigation. Police say Savile is a suspect in 199 crimes recorded so far, including dozens of cases of rape.

Other suspects arrested include former pop star Gary Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, singer Freddie Starr, and high-profile publicist Max Clifford. Starr and Clifford deny any wrongdoing; Gadd, who has previously been convicted of child sex offenses, has yet to speak publicly about his arrest.

A separate report also published Wednesday found the BBC had committed a "grave breach" of its editorial guidelines when it aired a "Newsnight" broadcast last month wrongly linking a politician to child sex abuse allegations.

Two additional internal inquiries are still in the works. One, led by former Appeal Court judge Janet Smith, is investigating the culture and practices of the BBC during Savile's tenure there. Another, led by lawyer Dinah Rose, is examining how the corporation has handled complaints of sexual harassment.

Other inquiries spawned by the scandal include a Department of Health investigation into decision to involve Savile in the management of Britain's Broadmoor psychiatric hospital in the 1980s, and an inquiry into prosecutors' decision not to prosecute Savile in 2009.

Obama discusses crisis in Congo with Kagame

(AP) ? President Barack Obama warned Rwandan President Paul Kagame on Tuesday that any support for the M23 rebel group in eastern Congo is "inconsistent with Rwanda's desire for stability and peace" in the war-torn region.

The White House said Obama stressed to Kagame in a phone call "the importance of permanently ending all support to armed groups" in Congo, where the M23 is operating despite a major peacekeeping operation there.

A recent U.N. report accused the Rwandan government of backing the rebels, a charge that Kagame's government has denied. The rebels have been accused of rape, using child soldiers and conducting summary executions in eastern Congo.

In the call with Kagame, the White House said Obama "underscored that any support to the rebel group M23 is inconsistent with Rwanda's desire for stability and peace." The president urged Kagame to abide by recent commitments he made with the leaders of Congo and Uganda to address the crisis and said an agreement needs to emerge from the crisis "that includes an end to impunity for M23 commanders and others who have committed serious human rights abuses."

The White House said Obama "welcomed President Kagame's commitment to moving forward in finding a peaceful solution" in eastern Congo.

Members of Congress and human rights groups have pressed the Obama administration to do more to address the security and humanitarian crisis in Congo, where an estimated 5 million people have been killed since a second regional war began in 1997.

On Nov. 20, M23 rebels seized the town of Goma in Eastern Congo, which is estimated to have mineral deposits worth trillions of dollars.

Human rights groups have asked Obama to appoint a presidential envoy to the embattled country and to cut off aid to Rwanda.

ConocoPhillips to sell Algerian unit to Pertamina

(Reuters) - ConocoPhillips struck a deal to sell its Algerian business unit to Indonesian state oil firm Pertamina for around $1.75 billion.

The U.S. oil and natural gas company said Tuesday that the unit it is selling, ConocoPhillips Algeria Ltd, holds interests in three major onshore oil fields with average net production of 11,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. ConocoPhillips said the net carrying value of the Algerian assets was about $850 million at the end of October.

The proposed sale is subject to pre-emption rights by ConocoPhillips' partners in the fields and to Algerian government approval.

ConocoPhillips has been shedding overseas assets to cut debt and increase its investment in lower-cost domestic shale oil and gas. It has already beaten its target of asset sales worth $20 billion by the end of 2012, including the sale of its stake in Lukoil, Russia's second-biggest oil producer.

The company expects the deal to be completed by mid-2013.

Shares of ConocoPhillips closed at $58.28 on the New York Stock Exchange on Monday.

David Pakman, Westboro Baptist Church Spar Over Picketing Of School Shooting Funerals (VIDEO)

Radio and television host David Pakman offered the Westboro Baptist Church 30 uninterrupted minutes of air time on his program if the controversial group agreed to call off picketing the funerals of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings.

In a segment on Pakman's program, The David Pakman Show, that was published to YouTube Dec. 17, Margie Phelps-Roper, a spokesperson for the WBC, said that the group planned to picket the funerals of the children that died in the shooting.

"Wherever we can put these signs up, including those funerals, is what we'll do," Phelps-Roper said in the segment, referring to the signs with anti-gay slogans that the WBC is known for displaying at the funerals of U.S. soldiers and people with AIDS.

The group had also threatened to picket a vigil for the victims of the shooting on Sunday.

Watch the full video of the segment here.

The host offered airtime in exchange for dropping the pickets, telling Phelps-Roper that his "goal is to keep you and your signs away from the funerals of these kids in Connecticut."

Phelps-Roper would not respond to Pakman's offer other than to say that she would "float the proposal."

Pakman noted that he might regret his offer in the long run, and that his viewers might not agree with the compromise. The host said that he'd contacted the Westboro Baptist Church's public relations person and that the group was considering his proposal.

The controversial, quasi-religious group, which is known for its anti-gay politics, is currently the subject of two separate petitions on the White House's website. One demands an IRS investigation of the WBC, and another seeks to have it legally recognized as a hate group, thus stripping it of its tax-exempt status.

The Westboro Baptist Church is also currently the focus of a campaign by hacktivist group Anonymous, which hijacked Phelps-Roper's Twitter account, took down its website and posted personal data of WBC members on the Internet.

What do you think of David Pakman's offer? Let us know in the comments.

Noise power on adhesion: New model may help robotic fingers, made of a soft surface, manipulate small objects

Dec. 17, 2012 ? Imagine a solid ball rolling down a slightly inclined ramp. What could be perceived as child's play is the focus of serious theoretical research by Manoj Chaudhury and Partho Goohpattader, two physicists from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA.

Their study, which is about to be published in EPJ E, has one thing in common with childhood behaviour. It introduces a mischievous idea, namely studying the effect of random noise, such as vibrations, on the ball. They found it could lower the energy barrier to set the ball in motion.

The authors used a ramp with a micro?textured surface. This surface is akin to that of a gecko's feet, made of so-called microfibrils capable of adhering to any surface by deforming elastically. They then studied the effect of vibration on a ball left on the top of such a textured ramp. They found that the sphere starts rolling when subjected to a computer-generated random vibration. To set the ball in motion requires activation energy, the model shows. It has been long known that the same applies to the adhesion of molecules, on a much smaller scale, as predicted theoretically by the so-called Arrhenius kinetics. This study pinpoints a finite threshold of intensity for the vibration noise above which the ball is set in motion.

This finding could have implications for the removal of water droplets from super-hydrophobic surfaces such as plant leaves. Other applications could also include gecko feet-mimetic adhesives, better adhesion of rubber tires on roads, and the use of fluids, instead of electronics, to perform a digital operation. In addition, new MicroElectroMechanical systems (MEMs), based on robotic fingers capable of displacing a small object, could be assisted by noise.

Wall Street poised for higher open on "cliff" optimism

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street opened higher on Monday as investors found encouragement in signs of movement over the weekend in "fiscal cliff" negotiations.

Republican House Speaker John Boehner edged slightly closer to President Barack Obama's key demands as they try to avert the tax hikes and spending cuts that are set to take effect in the new year.

Sources familiar with the talks confirmed that Boehner proposed extending low tax rates for everyone who has earned less than $1 million, and rates would rise for wages above that. But Boehner's new positions were still far from those held by Obama.

"The universal feeling is still that this will probably be solved" but it might take until the last minute, said Ryan Detrick, senior technical strategist at Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Uncertainty over when and if a federal budget deal will be done has kept investors cautious in what is already a normally quiet trading period heading into year-end.

Investors are worried the economy could slide back into recession if the full brunt of the tax and spending changes is allowed, though most expect a deal will eventually be reached.

The market shrugged off Monday's less cheery economic data that showed manufacturing activity in the New York region declined for a fifth month in a row in December.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> gained 67.89 points, or 0.52 percent, to 13,202.90. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> rose 9.29 points, or 0.66 percent, to 1,422.87. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> added 15.74 points, or 0.53 percent, to 2,987.07.

If the S&P 500 sustains its gains through the session, the index would snap a two-day losing streak. Despite the uncertainty of fiscal cliff talks, the S&P has performed well in the last month, grinding higher in mostly light volume.

Markets are likely to continue that sort of momentum through the end of the year, which is typically a bullish time for stocks, said Detrick.

Clearwire Corp agreed to sell the rest of the company to Sprint Nextel Corp for a slightly sweeter $2.2 billion offer, days after minority shareholders criticized the previous bid as too low. Clearwire tumbled 12.2 percent to $2.96, while Sprint was up 0.9 percent at $5.60.

Apple Inc slipped 0.7 percent to $506.30 after two firms cut their price targets on the stock.

The tech giant said it sold more than 2 million of its new iPhone 5 smartphones in China during the three days after its launch there on Friday, but the figures did not ease worries about stiffer competition. Apple shares have tumbled nearly 30 percent in about three months.

Your Kitchen Trash Reborn As Abstract Art

Consider the lowly soda can. After the pop, the fizz, the guzzle, it's dumped into a recycling bin and chucked curbside with the rest of the trash.

But just as it has reached a sort of existential low point ? empty, forgotten, discarded ? voila! The can transforms into a thing of beauty.

Photojournalist Huguette Roe captures that metamorphosis in her series "Recycle," which explores the afterlife of bottles, cans and other packaging destined to be reborn for reuse. Over the course of two years, the Belgian-born, U.S.-based Roe visited more than 100 recycling centers in the U.S. and France, photographing bales of recyclables, sorted and smashed together for the journey to the processing plant.

"I was attracted to the color, graphic composition, subject," Roe tells The Salt of her inspiration for the project.

Egg cartons rise and fold like a ridged, otherworldly landscape.

Rusted tin cans glint like gold.

Green plastic bottles become an undulating ocean.

"To me," she says, "they look like abstract paintings."

But to a lot of recyclers, those bales looked like private property ? and many companies turned down her requests to shoot on their premises, Roe says. "It's trash, but they don't want me to take any photos of their equipment ? like I am a spy or something!"

Despite those setbacks, there was plenty for her camera to snap ? and plenty for us viewers to reflect on. In 2010, American households threw away nearly 76 million tons of steel, glass, plastic, aluminum containers and other packaging, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The bright side: Nearly half of those materials got recycled.

"We live in an environment of waste," Roe says. "Our eyes are accustomed to it and it belongs to our lifestyle, so we don't question it."

But by altering our perspective on the familiar, her images might just challenge us to re-evaluate our disposables.
