My Recent Dinner at Candle Cafe in NYC

A few days ago, I went for dinner at Candle Cafe, an organic vegan restaurant in NYC.

For those who don?t know, Candle Cafe, along with its sister restaurant Candle 79, pretty much dominates the organic food scene on the Upper East Side.

While downtown Manhattan has many different organic restaurants, the Upper East Side has very few. Here?s what I had.

GUACAMOLE WITH CARROTS AND CELERY

SPROUT SALAD

Along with mixed field greens, the salad came with carrots, raisins, sesame seeds and sprouted lentils, snow peas and alfalfa. On the side, the waiter was kind enough to give me two dressings, carrot ginger and creamy wasabi.

CARROT CAKE

The guacamole was one of the best that I have had in a long time. It had wonderful flavor, the ranchero sauce underneath added some great spice, and I devoured it all within a few minutes.

The salad was crunchy and refreshing. It?s not often you can get a salad with those three great sprouts, and I love how they included raisins and sesame seeds.

To be honest, I wasn?t crazy about the carrot cake. While I am all for vegan desserts, I am not a big fan of soy in my ice cream, cakes or pies.

Will I go back to Candle Cafe the next time I am on the Upper East Side?

Absolutely, but I?ll pass on dessert. The food is always fresh and consistent, and the service is excellent.
